Malta Jobless Rate Falls to 3.4% in Q2
The unemployment rate in Malta decreased to 3.4 percent in the second quarter of 2019 from a downwardly revised 3.7 percent in the same period of the previous year. The number of unemployed fell by 223 to 8,815 while employed increased by 16,468 to 251,700, mostly in full-time jobs (up 15,213 to 217,843). Unemployment rose among people aged 15-24 years to 9.1 percent from 8.4 percent in Q2 2018 but decreased in the 25-74 age group to 2.7 percent from 3.1 percent a year ago. Meantime, the activity rate rose to 67 percent from 63.3 percent a year earlier and the employment rate went up to 64.6 percent from 61.1 percent in the corresponding period of 2018.

The unemployment rate in Malta fell to 3.5 percent in the first quarter of 2019 from 3.9 percent in the same period of the previous year. The number of unemployed dropped by 358 to 8,853 while employed increased by 14,917 to 241,468. By genders, the jobless rate was lower for men (3.4 percent vs 3.9 percent in Q1 2018) than for women (3.8 percent vs 3.9 percent). Meantime, the activity rate went up to 74.9 percent from 72.6 percent a year earlier, with the highest rate being recorded among people aged 25-54 (86.7 percent). The employment rate rose to 72.2 percent from 69.7 percent in the corresponding period of 2018.

Malta Jobless Rate Falls to Record Low of 3.5% in Q4
The unemployment rate in Malta fell to 3.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 from 4.0 percent in the same period of the previous year. It was the lowest jobless rate since at least the first quarter of 2001, as the number of unemployed declined by 724 to 8,713 and employed rose by 12,260 to 239,427. By genders, the jobless rate was lower for women (3.4 percent vs 4.0 percent in Q4 2017) than for men (3.6 percent vs 4.0 percent). Meantime, the activity rate went up to 75.0 percent from 73.5 percent a year earlier, with the highest rate being recorded among people aged 25-54 (85.9 percent). Thus, the employment rate increased to 72.3 percent from 70.5 percent in the corresponding period of 2017.
