Japan Exports Fall for 12th Month
Exports from Japan declined 7.9 percent from a year earlier to JPY 6.38 trillion in November 2019, marking the longest run of declines in exports since a 14-month stretch to November 2016 and compared to market consensus of 8.6 percent drop. That was mainly due to lower sales of manufactured goods (-11.1 percent), transport equipment (-9.7 percent), machinery (-12.0 percent), chemicals (-7.4 percent), and electrical machinery (-5.4 percent). Among main trading partners, sales were mainly dragged by falls to China (-5.4 percent), the US (-12.9 percent), South Korea (-17.0 percent), Hong Kong (-1.5 percent), and Thailand (-10.5 percent).

Japan Exports Fall the Most in 3 Years
Exports from Japan declined 9.2 percent yoy to JPY 6.58 trillion in October of 2019, compared to market expectations of a 7.6 percent decline. It is the 11th straight month of annual falls in sales, mainly due to lower shipments of transport equipment (-7.4 percent), namely motor vehicles (-9.6 percent); machinery (-12.9 percent), namely power generating machines (-20.9 percent); electrical machinery (-8.3 percent); chemicals (-9.7 percent); manufactured goods (-13.4 percent), namely iron and steel products (-16.7 percent); and raw materials (-16.5 percent). Among main trading partners, exports were mainly dragged by sales to China (-10.3 percent), the US (-11.4 percent), South Korea (-23.1 percent), Thailand (-14.6 percent), Singapore (-14.6 percent) and Germany (-19.4 percent).

Japan Exports Fall More than Expected in September
Exports from Japan declined 5.2 percent from a year earlier to JPY 6.37 trillion in September 2019, the tenth straight month of decrease and compared to market expectations of a 4.0 percent fall, amid weakening global demand and the US-China trade dispute. Lower sales were recorded in transport equipment (-2.7 percent); machinery (-11.2 percent); electrical machinery (-4.7 percent); manufactured goods (-3.8 percent); and chemicals (-2.1 percent). Among main trading partners, exports dropped to China (-6.7 percent), South Korea (-15.9 percent), Hong Kong (-10.3 percent), Singapore (-11.4 percent), Thailand (-14.4 percent), the US (-7.9 percent) and Australia (-8.4 percent), but rose to the Middle East (8.5 percent), in particular the UAE (11.4 percent), Saudi Arabia (29.2 percent) and Western Europe (3.4 percent), mostly Switzerland (156.8 percent).

Exports from Japan declined 8.2 percent from a year earlier to JPY 6.14 trillion in August 2019, the ninth straight month of decrease and compared to market expectations of a 10.9 percent fall, amid weakening global demand and the US-China trade dispute. Lower sales were recorded in transport equipment (-8.2 percent); machinery (-12.3 percent); electrical machinery (-8.1 percent); manufactured goods (-11 percent); and chemicals (-5.1 percent). Among main trading partners, exports dropped to to China (-12.1 percent), the US (-4.4 percent), Hong Kong (-11.5 percent), South Korea (-9.4 percent), Taiwan (-8.5 percent) and the EU (-1.3 percent).

Japan Exports Fall for 8th Month
Exports from Japan dropped 1.6 percent from a year earlier to JPY 6.64 trillion in July 2019, the eighth straight month of decrease and compared to market expectations of 2.2 percent fall, amid weakening global demand and the US-China trade dispute. Declines were observed in machinery (-7.3 percent) led by semiconductor machinery, pump and centrifuges, metalworking machinery and parts of computer; electrical machinery (-7.3 percent) due to semiconductors, electrical apparatus and measuring, and electrical power machinery; manufactured goods (-5.1 percent) such as iron & steel products, nonferrous metals and manufactures of metals. Conversely, motor vehicles exports jumped 9.2 percent. Among main trade partners, exports decreased to China (-9.3 percent), South Korea (-6.9 percent) and Taiwan (-8.2 percent), but rose to the US (8.4 percent), the EU (2.2 percent), and the Middle East (17.6 percent).

Japan Exports Fall for Seventh Month
Exports from Japan fell 6.7 percent from a year earlier to JPY 6.58 trillion in June 2019, compared to market consensus of a 5.6 percent drop and May's 7.8 percent fall. It was the seventh straight month of declines in shipments, amid weakening global demand and the US-China trade dispute. Declines were observed in machinery (-8 percent), led by metalworking machinery (-22.2 percent) and power generating machine (-7.7 percent); transport equipment (-7.6 percent), due to motor vehicles (-0.7 percent) and parts (-14.1 percent); electrical machinery (-9.3 percent); and manufactured goods (-8.6 percent) such as iron and steel products (-11.6 percent) and nonferrous metals (-11.8 percent). Among main trade partners, exports fell mainly to China (-10.1 percent), Hong Kong (-4.3 percent), South Korea (-14.8 percent), Singapore (-7-9 percent), Australia (-18.7 percent), the EU (-6.7 percent), and the Middle East (-16.4 percent). Still, sales to the US climbed 4.8 percent.
